Case Study: HLB International

Nurturing talent at HLB HAMT

HLB HAMT is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and has been a member of the HLB Network since 2008. Here we look at the firm’s Learning and Development (L&D) approach.

Over the last decade, HLB HAMT has emerged as a foremost business adviser in the region, continually evolving and adapting to the latest technology to provide real-time solutions to our vast range of clients.

HLB HAMT is dedicated to delivering high-quality audit and advisory services. We have continuously been pushing the bar of excellence ever since our inception in 1999 and have successfully scaled new heights.

An overview of L&D at HLB HAMT:

In our industry, employees are one of our most valuable assets, and we need to invest in them. At HLB HAMT, the focus is always on talent. The key aspects we emphasise as an organisation are attraction, retention and development of talent.

In fact, talent development is a fundamental part of our mission statement:

“We seek to transform our people into leaders who thereby emphasise impactful, contemporary, and rational solutions to enable our clients to thrive in an evolving and complex world.”

To help us achieve our mission of transforming our people into leaders, learning and development plays a pivotal role.

How does HLB HAMT use L&D to attract talent?

At HLB HAMT, talent development is our key Employee Value Proposition (EVP). For us, career progression is a key strategy for attraction and retention of talent. The majority of our employees, especially senior management, are homegrown. We hardly do lateral hiring for managerial and senior management positions. We develop our own people from within the organisation and that makes us different from the rest.

The growth path is transparent and is made clear to all employees during onboarding. This process is also followed during performance reviews.

L&D challenges and how we overcame them:

As all HLB HAMT leaders are nurtured internally over their career, they have not undergone much formal training on leadership and people management. Making our staff follow a particular learning calendar and undertake change management is a big cultural shift. Therefore, in the culture of our organisation, leadership development is a challenge. We are aware that it is crucial for organisations to develop leaders at every level—from team leads on the front lines, all the way up to partner level—to support growth and ensure that our business will be successful in the short and long term.

Some of initiatives that we are taking to address the challenges are:

  • Arranging regular leadership development sessions for managers at all levels.
  • Individual coaching sessions for specific managers and individuals to address particular of concern.
  • Extensive use of online learning portals like the HLB Skills Hub, tracking usage and doing regular follow ups.
  • Making training mandatory at all levels and roles.
  • Establishing L&D as a company priority by incentivising completion of learning modules. Rewarding and recognising employees who actively engage in internal training and with the HLB Skills Hub, such as by completing courses, earning badges, or sharing their knowledge.
  • Asking employees to share their learning experiences and accomplishments with all employees on regular basis and recommend courses to their peers. We communicate the value of learning and development at all levels.

Working together with the HLB Community

Learning and development remains a key focus for HLB HAMT to achieve our mission. We will continue with the ongoing internal and external training programmes with more emphasis on online learning platforms such as the HLB Skills Hub that we use extensively.

Being part of the HLB global network has helped us achieve our L&D objectives. HLB heavily invests in its people, who are at the heart of every initiative it undertakes. HLB has provided us with the resources and tools, such as the HLB Skills Hub, that take care of our diverse learning needs. We regularly monitor the usage of the Skills Hub as a learning platform for all our departments and we have identified the mandatory role-based sessions to be attended by the departments on the portal.

Being part of the HLB global community has increased our collaboration and dedication to L&D. It has proved to us that together we can make it happen.
